Why a Wonder: Sand dunes are great to photograph, as is a nice serene sunset over the ocean. The fact that you can do both at Sandwich Harbor is wonderful. Where: Sandwich Harbor in Namibia, is just south of the town Swakopmund. Access is restrivted, so a guided tour is the best way deep into the dunes. When: Winter is best time to visit. I imagine that the other seasons are just too hot.

Why a Wonder: To me... this tree is a wonder because it's singularly unique. I've not seen another tree like this in the area. It would seem right at home in a place like New Zealand, Africa, or even the depths of Tolkien's imagination. It resides not in some far away epic place, but in a small park on the Hudson River in Westchester County, New York. Where: Croton Point Park, New York. When: December, 2020. Photography: The tree is very wide, so attempting to get it in frame entirely needs an extreme wide angle lens, which loses some of the detail of its twisted nature. I chose to crop in and get close, allowing the menacing branches to bleed out of the frame.

Why a Wonder: Antarctica is by its very existence a wonder. One of the most remote and inhospitable places on the planet, yet there's so much raw natural beauty nestled amongst its frozen expanse. Where: Cuverville Island, Antarctica. When: January, 2014. Photography: The stormy overcast skies gives this a sense of cold moodiness. The decision to go with a shallow depth of field to help the cormorants pop off of the glacier in the background helps this feel like part portrait and part landscape.
